The majority of my clients say they want candid lifestyle images. Is this really what you mean when you say this? Too many clients to mention tell me they don’t like themselves in photographs. These are always candid shots taken at family events, so what do they mean?
Stiff and unnatural versus relaxed
I think the answer lies a bit deeper under the surface. There will always be place for documentary style images, I love them. I don’t necessarily always love how I look in them, but they capture the purity of a moment wonderfully. That isn’t the point here, it’s not about one style vs the other. The point is uncovering what you really want or need.
The perfect headshot
You need to look authentically you, approachable and an expert in whatever it is that you’re a rock star at.
Being a rock star at what you do is unlikely to involve you having modelling experience. You’re unlikely to ‘know your angles’ (why would you?!) and I’d be amazed if you knew the difference that leaning a few centimeteres in a specific direction would have to how the camera perceives and translates your body. You don’t need to know this stuff (that’s my job)!
If we accept that candid photographs capture us in the moment and thus may or may not be as flattering as we’d hope, what’s the solution?
Gentle posing guidance
Despite the negative connotations of the word, posing isn’t synonymous with a stiff and formal Victorian style portrait.
I know that you want to look relaxed in your images. Seeing someone look stiff makes the viewer feel their discomfort so that’s of no use to anybody. I also know that you have a hang-up about your chin/nose/neck/arms/waist/thighs….. the list goes on.
Being guided in your positioning isn’t about being stiff. It’s about communication. The camera does not see how we see in real life. We see in 3D, it can only flatten to 2D so information is warped, compressed, not as it looks to the human eye.
My interpretation of this request?
You want to look natural, comfortable and authentically you in a way that is flattering and allows your personality to shine through.
Lucky for you I know just how to achieve that! ;-)
