planning your maternity photoshoot

I recommend scheduling your maternity session for when you’re 7–8 months pregnant (my diary gets very full so please book several months in advance to avoid disappointment). At this point, your bump will be beautifully pronounced but you probably won’t be feeling as tired, swollen and sore as you might nearer your delivery date. But this is just a rough guide – I’ve held sessions with clients the week before they’ve given birth, and they’ve felt fabulous and we’ll work around how you’re feeling on the day.

A maternity photoshoot can be as daring (above) or as modest as you like. Your session will be bespoke and utterly perfect for you. Some women are keen to be photographed alone – just Mum and her bump. Others like to make space for their partner too. If your unborn baby has siblings, bringing them to the session will yield heart-melting images. Your photoshoot, your choice!

A maternity session is usually scheduled alongside a newborn session, to document the open-ended nature of your story and to create stunning before and after images.

The whole experience from planning the shoot to viewing the images was fun, easy and really informative. We felt ready to make the most out of our maternity and newborn shoots with all Kirsty’s advice and expertise. Kirsty was so professional yet relaxed and so great with both my toddler and baby it actually made it a relaxing experience for me which is hard to believe with a 2-year-old and a 3 week newborn in tow! She really is a baby whisperer! The resulting images were fantastic and we’re so pleased with them. I would highly recommend her.
